why a cracked lcd panel

How does one determine the cause of a cracked LCD panel?
And particularly, how will Dell service determine the cause.

I've got a 5 month old Vostro 1500, no extended warranty.
While using it I closed the top to answer the door and
when I returned it looked like a crack at a single point
resulting in 1 inch wide bands of no image below and
to the right of the crack.

I'm expecting Dell service to say user-caused damage.
But I know of nothing that should have cause this crack.
There are certainly no marks on the cover nor the glass
to suggest abuse. Nor any torquing of the case. It
barely moves.

I looked to see if there were reports by others of cracked
panels but saw none. Did I overlook some thread?

What might cause such a crack if not impact?

Any suggestions for approaching Dell service to enhance
my chances of getting warranty service?

what about your house insurance.

my daughter did the very same...........luckily it was an old lappy so I
bought a panel off ebay for £15.

The quick answer is that it's on you - unless - you happened to have their
"Complete Care" / accidental coverage.

I can save you the time and breath attempting to get it replaced otherwise.

Additionally, you're not going to be pleased with the price of the
replacement LCD from either Dell spare parts or even on ebay.

You're very likely to be looking at $200/$300 minimum for the screen even if
you swap it out yourself.

Another idea, attach a nice monitor, keyboard and mouse, and use it as
a quiet and unobtrusive desktop.

I use my Inspiron 1200 that way, with a huge 24" monitor. Best computer
I've ever had. Any laptop would do, though.

A black towel covers the laptop, arranged to give it enough air to cool
itself, on a Belkin cooling pad.

You might also look at some of the off lease places. Some put out parts
only machines, usually laptops, that just aren't worth the effort to part
out.

Good Idea, the folks across the hall from our office have one set-up that
way as a Sales & Marketing display in their lobby.
