I have a newly installed Windows 98 system on my computer . I tried
to use the windows media player (to play mp3, or wav) and it played
too fast. I downloaded the most recent media player (wmp9) and it
also is playing too fast. I suspect it is a problem with the audio
card??? Any suggestions???

Try a different player e.g. WinAmp.

When you say updating drivers Aaron, do you mean the drivers for wmp9
or ... the sound card? There is no driver for the wmp9 is there, as
you just download it and away it goes. I've unstalled a driver for a
printer. Does the sound card have a driver? If this is the case,
how would I update it, I mean, I don't even know what kind of sound
card I have (or even what a sound card is for that matter). Hope I'm
not being boringly ignorant. any advice appreciated. Lester.
