I've just re-installed my windows after failing to fix it, and everytim
I do this it writes over the booty-thingy part (if someone knows th
proper term please tell me) so now it just boots straight into window
instead of going into the screen where I choose which OS to use.

Is there a way to fix this without having to re-install suse?

You need to reinstall grub in your MBR, you should be able to do this
using your SUSE install disk. Just Google for reinstall MBR SUSE. This is
a very frequently asked question so you'll find a lot of answers.

And as a permanent fix, you *may* be able to put the boot in the Linux
partition instead of the MBR, leave the MSFT boot in the MBR, and set
the Linux partition as the (only) active partition. I used to do that
with LILO "back when," and the crappy boot record will (should) boot the
active partition.

So before you reinstall Linux,
- run grub and install in the Linux partition, like /dev/sda2
- use fdisk, parted, or whatever to set the Linux partition as the only
active partition
- try a boot and report back

Waranty limited to purchase price ;-)
