Everyone,
I was hoping to get some insight on a problem I'm having with a
new G5 XServe running MacOS X (10.3.3). I currently run a bunch of Sun
Solaris hosts which connect up to a Lantronix serial switch (CS3200),
so that in the event of a network outage, we can still access the
hosts, plus we gain the ability to access the OpenBoot PROM and
startup messages remotely. I'd like to do the same with the recently
purchased Mac, and I believe it can from all of the documentation
stating so, but I cannot get this functionality to work. I've tried
the following:
* removed the video card
* set the NVRAM input-device-1 and output-device-1 to scca
(default)
* ensured that /System/Library/StartupItems/SerialTerminalSupport/SerialTerminalSupport
has ENABLE_SERIAL_TERMINAL=$TRUE
* verified that /etc/ttys has an entry for 'tty.serial
"/usr/libexec/getty serial.57600" vt100 on secure' (also tried
serial.9600)
* ensured that the CS3200 is set to 9600,8,N,1 (and 57600)
* connected a laptop with a null modem cable
* verified the converter from Lantronix is the correct one
* turned on and off the serial port in the networking preference
program
After all of these changes, and multiple calls to Apple, no one
has an idea of what needs to be changed - that's why I'm hoping one of
you might have experienced this before. If you have any information on
how to appropriately set the serial port up for console access, or
spot something I've missed, please let me know. BTW, I've attempted to
check
www.info.apple.com for the manuals, but it appears that the site
is down, and I've not seen any posts/sites that describe fully what
I'm seeking to accomplish. Thanks in advance for your assistance.
