10000 RPM SCSI drives very very slow on Redhat enterprise 2.1

I just installed Redhat enterprise 2.1 Update 3 on my IBM server. (was
    redhat 7.2 before)

Everything works fine but the SCSI drives that suddenly became very
slow. A copy between 2 discs gives about 1 or 2mb/sec max, swapping on
the disc freezes every terminal. Even saving in vi is slow.

I know that this problem is vague (a lot) and that it could be
millions of different issues, but I'm just wondering if the generic
SCSI drivers that come with this release of Redhat can be thrusted?
The driver that is currently installed is aic79xx.o

Please someone give me a hint.
    Thanx.
