2840 configuration

Can anyone tell me if the 2840 must be connected to a network via a PC in order to get the "scan to" function on the machine to work?

Our 2840 is currently connected to the router on the network and users can initiate scans from their workstations - but cannot scan to either email accounts or directories from the machine.
