Hi all,

Just wondering what the max sized HD I can use on this board is? I had a 40 gig Deskstar that died and Hitachi sent me a new drive, however, it's 60 gigs.

When I plug this drive in, my bios doesn't detect it on the IDE detection.I haven't updated my bios in some time and I'm just wondering if this is a BIOS thing or if it's my HD that's a DOA.

thanks,

Eric

Dosn't the BE6 have a highpoint raid controller?
If you connect to that the motherboard bios IDE detect won't find it.

the BE6 has a Highpoint 366 ATA66 controller but NOT a 370 or higher raid controller.

this is correct.. ata66. So does this mean that it's impossible for my 60 gig drive to work? your going to have to excuse my ignorance.. I'm not a power user when it comes to mobo's. I looked all over the abit site and board and couldn't find any info pertaining to this.

thanks in advance.

your 60 gig drive should work fine with a current bios flashed to the mainboard. if your drive is not being detected, then I would revisit the jumpering, the ribbon cable, or the power plug. for the power plug, make sure that none of the female pins are spread too far open which would cause an intermittent or non-existent contact.

that board, with a current bios, should support up to a 120 gig drive if I am not mistaken.

well it's probably been like 2-3 years since I've flashed my bios.. so I'll give it a go and see if that helps.

Do you recommend getting the bios from the abit site or from somwhere like award?

thanks for the help.

My BE6 has the MU bios and Abit haven't released a new version for quite some time. Luckily, when the did revise the MU bios is did support 40GB+ HDD's so l don't think you're going to have a problem. Worst case scenario is that you get a new PCI-ATA133 card that will see very large drive (120GB+) and just boot from that.

you want to flash with a bios from Abit. the newest version is TH if I am not mistaken. you can reboot and look at the bottom left area of the screen during the early stages of POST and look at the long string of characters that you see there. the last two characters are the bios ID and then you can see what you currently have flashed to the board.

MU is *way* old. since MU there has been NU, PL, PV, QP, and TH.

Upgrading the bios dosn't allow the the main bios to detect a drive on the HPT controller. The original poster still hasn't said if he's using the chipset controller or the HPT. Expecting the "IDE Detect" bios function to find devices on additional controllers is one of the most common problems posted by those new to add on controllers.

well, don't forget that the Highpoint bios gets upgraded (assuming a newer version of Highpoint bios is in the mainboard bios) depending on how old the mainboard bios is. I agree that we still don't have a clue which IDE channel he is trying to use.

Hey there, TomG,

`Smatter ???

Losing power to your Alum Foil Helmut ???

Sheesh ... change the battery.
:-)

Qed.

PS Personally,
. I find that AFH units, fabricated from Oven Wrap are . more energy efficient ... . hint ... hint.

mine went up in smoke when I tried to power it from the AC main. hair didn't fare too well either.

Well that (finally) explains what happened to the hair. What happened to your youth? Don't tell us you've decided to let everything go and grow old "gracefully".

of course I'm growing old gracefully! you should see how graceful I get when I have two or three sapphire martini's!

Running a 60 gig Western dig on be6 ver1 highpoint controller no probs. Later Rich "Eric" wrote:

I figured as much: Bull in the China Shop graceful... Right?

Now... as to the Missus... that's growing old gracefully! She's about to burst out of that dress and you don't appear to be giving it a second thought.

Nah. Foil is cheap and it comes on long rolls. All TomG has to do is fashion a new one and he's back in business with adequate protection from the brain probes.

You're not suggesting that he squandered his youth, are you? With 2 to 3 Sapphire Martinis, nothing is squandered. It's only *Enhanced*.

If that ain't letting everything go... tell me what is! The "graceful" part is that he no longer keeps the wife in the car to hide her... but allows her to be photographed in public.

I tried a new picture but they really looked too decrepit. I want the world to remember them in their prime. Besides, the dog died of old age.

Other than throwing a piston or two, it's still rusting out in a field somewhere there in Virginia.
