I have a KR7A raid (CX Bios) with 1gb of ram onboard - i don't want the expense of upgrading RAM, CPU and motherboard and wondered if there was a way to move upto a faster processor (beyond the XP2400 that the board would normally support) or if the ceiling is the XP2400 with no way to go beyond.

I appreciate that i would need to run a high multiplier with a lower FSB and that would make a hit on the performance, but it would provide an upgrade path. I don't know if there are different voltage considerations, etc.

Can anybody please advise?

If you've already got a 2400+, your best bet would be to try and just clock it higher. The default is 15x133. If you can change the multiplier to 16 or 17 you could try that, or you could raise the FSB up from 133MHz to somewhere around 145-150. 15x145 would give you about 2175MHz (about the same as a 2700+). You may need to raise vcore too. Personally, I wouldn't go over 1.85v, but that's just me.

If you only upgrade the CPU then the FSB would not, and should not, be changed.

Every reason to think that a Barton 3200xp will work on your board as your current CPU and the Barton are both the same model - "Athlon XP".

You might check Wes's page to see if you can get to the cpu multiplier you need with cpu you plan to get and the motherboard bios revision you have. http://home1.gte.net/res0exft/
