I have Abit KX-333R and it worked fine a few months.

Now for some reason I can't change ANYTHING in my BIOS. If I change anything (even only the clock) and then save the changes and exit, after trying to restart system goes completely blank. Only thing I can do then is clear CMOS by jumper, and start the system using bios defaults.

It works ok on defaults (without crashing) but my system is much slower beecause CPU isn't the right type, FSB is lower and all other settings are slower on default.

I tried flashing the BIOS to latest version, and I changed the CMOS battery just in case. Didn't help.

What else can I do?

The problem is somewhere in the bios settings.

Disable speed error hold and halt on all errors. Relax ram timings. Set cpu to defaults in softmenu. Try increasing cpu drive strength and voltage. If your bios has a setting for shutdown on fan failure, disable it.

It will take some trial and error to isolate the one setting that is holding you back.

There's a good bios guide at www.rojakpot.com that may help.

How can the problem be in any setting?

Let me repeat:
1. I clear CMOS - so everything is default, right?
2. Then, if I go to BIOS and change for example only the system time and then Save&exit, system doesn't start untill I clear CMOS again.

(it works fine if I don't go to bios at all)

What happens if you go into the bios and don't change anything, or exit without saving changes?

There's something here that doesn't meet the eye. Any chance of a short, the mainboard touching the case somewhere besides the standoffs?

Any beeps or error codes? Lights, fans, other signs of life when the black screens occur?

Yes, it's very strange. What's even more strange, it works very stable in normal every day work, games etc. (It's a very stable win2k system that I'm proud of :) and I really don't want to spend hours by buying and installing a new mbo, reinstalling the whole system and so on...)

I don't think so...

No beeps, fans and hdds work normally I think.

I had this problem too when I first got my kx7. I'm not exactly sure what I did to get rid of it and it hasn't come back. One thing I do remember doing was "loading the optimized defaults" and rebooting. Seems like it all started working after that.
