I've gotten a lightly used ibm 20gb hd I want to add to my system. Tried setting it to master and connecting to ide 4, original hd on ide
3. IDE 1 & 2 are cd drives.

hd is ata 66, 5400 rpm. highpoint bootup screen sees both drives as does windows system properties. Windows explorer does not see it.

What next?

Format the drive.

not to sound stupid, but since the drive is not recognized at the dos level, how do i make sure that I fdisk it without touching my c drive. of course i could create a boot disk and disconnect c.

1. Run FDISK.
2. Use the display current partition (or something to that effect) info to examine your hard drives.
3. Select the right drive and do "Create new primary or logical partition"

Should be that easy.

Of course if you are not at all sure about what you're doing, you can always go with disconnecting the c: drive and using a boot floppy. Probably the most error proof way.
