Apple's automatic software updates and manually-run software updates are customized or "tailor-made" for the individual computer and can contain code that will "brick" your computer if you are on the Apple "hit list." Or you could say the "xhit list" - regardless, it's better to download the updates from the Apple web site and install them. Maybe not as convenient but, you get a general update for all users, free of specialized code.
