Hi folks,
I need to set up a low cost server. Its for a classroom situation where there isn't going to be continual high volume traffic, but the students will need to have a fairly secure archive of their data. To this end, I've ordered 4 * 250GB Maxtor EIDE drives and an AT7 Max (mk1)
Its probable that Windows server2003 is going to be used.
I'm just wondering on the optimum way of setting up the drives. As the connection to the network is going to be via the standard 100Mb ethernet, I'm assuming that I don't need to stripe the drives as the data transfer _should_ be ok as is (and a friend with a Max2 board has had an apparent nightmare with striped + mirrored drives when one of them went faulty)
So I'm assuming the best thing is to run in Raid1 ? with a pair of drives having another pair as a mirror - and I'd guess each one set as master on its own individual port?
But I'd guess that would give me drive C and D, each with 250GB of storage. Can I set up JBOD and a mirror to give one drive of 500GB with a mirror?? (I wouldn't normally do this, but it might make life easier for the admin staff if they only had one large drive to work with and allocate the space to the numerous students)
Any (sensible ;-) comments or advice on the above questions or the setup as a whole appreciated
TIA
Gareth.
