Automatically unmount USB drives if no app accesses them anymore?

  1. I switched from SuSE 9.2 Linux to a new PowerBook. I must say OSX is
really a ton better. It's a whole new computer experience.

Anyway, there's one thing I liked under Linux: You could set it up so
that it automatically mounts my USB hard drive whenever an application
tries to access it (e.g. when I click the icon or when I cd to that
path). It was also automagically *unmounted* when I closed that
    application.

This seems to me the ideal way to handle USB drives. I just close the
application that's using it and can safely unplug the USB drive!

Can I set that up in OSX, too? (I use tiger)

    Thanks
    Markus
