Bad experiences with my PowerBook G4 15" SuperDrive

I was having some pretty severe problems with my Matshita UJ-815
PowerBook SuperDrive. It was turning three-fourths of my attempted DVD
burns into coasters. After wasting most of my spindle of DVD-Rs, I
figured there had to be something else I could do. So I searched online
for updated UJ-815 firmware. Apple didn't have anything. BUT ... I
found unofficial firmware that doubled the speed of DVD burns (from 1X
to 2X), removed region code locks, and hasn't produced any coasters so
far! What gives? Why did I have to go to a third-party source to get
the hardware that came with my computer to work correctly?

P.S. I think it's pretty cool that with a simple firmware update I
doubled the speed of my DVD burner. Just wondering - why in the hell
wasn't 2X enabled in the first place, if the drive is physically capable
    of doing it anyway?!
