My BE6-II died. (ALL USING OS WINDOWS XP.) Pulled out a like-new BX6 Rev.2 and swapped mobos. Had little hope, but tried anyway, to install "old 40-g WD hd as Pri Master. No other hd's present, but cdrom is slave to the pri. hd. Sec. Master is cd-rw with a removable hd tray cabled as Slave. (All been working fine for > a year.) As I feared, the 'new' system does not recognize the 'old' hd. How can I cable a simple system where I can access and utilize the applications on the old hd? At least long enough to save the data to cd's via cdrw? ALL BETWEEN THE ">>>>>" IS EXTRA INFO

Got lots of spare parts, hd's, cpu's, mobo's, cdrw's, cdrom's, ram. (EX. of spares: enough to assemble an AMD XP2100 on an Asus A7N8X mobo-system; enough to asemble an Abit KT7 with AMD XP2100, a one-gig, or a 766mb system; Atrend slot-one with Pentium II 300, Celeron 300/450-via slotket-system; 2.5ghd's, 4.8-ghd, 10.2-g hd, 20-g hd.) Please help with a suggested cabled system that will allow access to and utilization of the 'old' 40-gig WD with the important data & programs on it.
PS: I assembled one, using a 6-gig hd as master and the old 40-g WD as slave--with nothing else on the system. I could access the 'old' hd fine. But, if I tried to open Quicken, it said there was a file missing, and that a fresh install of Quicken might solve the problem. Could get to all pics, mp3's, Word files, etc. The 'old' hd had several files saved on the desktop--could not find the 'old' desktop. Don't wish to re-install Quicken at this point, altho' I have the data saved on floppies. Just want my old hd back working as Master IF POSSIBLE.

Seems like there'd be some way to install it as Master by overwriting Windows XP or something w/out formatting and losing the prog's and data. Thanks for any answers and suggestions. sdlomi

Not sure what you mean by "the new system does not recognize the old hd" but here goes anyway.

Try an in-place upgrade.

Boot from your XP CD.
When asked Repair/Upgrade/New Install, choose New Install Windows will load some files, check the disk and "discover" your existing install whereupon it will once again offer to repair the existing installation. Choose Repair.

Windows should then "rediscover" all your new hardware and devices and reinstall with a new HAL with all your old software and GUI modifications still in place.

Thx, Colon for your care and suggestion. By "the new system does not recognize the old hd", I meant that when I replaced the mobo, it made a 'new system', and the old, 'full-of-info-hd is not recognized--it has not been changed at all from how it came out of the BE-mobo-system where the mobo died.. Upon booting, when it gets to identifying Primary Master, it shows there to be no Pri-Mas hd and says to 'Press F4 to continue'. If I press F4, nothing happens. I tried your suggestion: With the 'new' system just as described above and with the bios set to 'see' the cdrom 1st, when I reboot w/the XP-cd in the cdrom, it stops at the statement "Insert boot-disc and press enter"--nothing happens here either. It's as if the 'new system' not only sees no hd as pri. master, it also sees no cdrom as pri-slave. Any other suggestion you may have? Thanks again for your help. sdlomi

As both boards use the BX chip-set it should work without too many problems. Certainly using a drive with an operating system already installed could not cause the drive 'not to be recognised' ......If the drive is not recognised it must be a problem with either the board, the hard drive, the cable, or the jumper configuration. Try installing the HD as primary master and the CD as secondary master....and double check the jumper settings.

Go into bios and use the "Detect IDE Device" function. This should find the drive if it's still working. You should then set up the bios to boot from that drive. Windowsxp should find little difference between the chipset functions of two motherboards.
