Every few months you should take a can of compressed air
and blow the dust out of the fan and air vents on your laptop.

Yesterday I did one of my full image backups (Acronis to a file
server). This takes a couple hours and the machine really working
hard. I noticed the machine was running really really hot and it
eventually shut itself down. When it cooled down a little I checked
and it looked like it might be time for a warranty replacement for the
    fan.

I blew the dust out with a can of compressed air. All sorts
of crap blew out and the machine has been well behaved since.

Good advice, and is even more important with desktops. They can REALLY
    attract the dust and lint.
