Can't disable onboard video

I'm trying to install a pci video card in my computer, but it's not
working. The board is some no-name brand...Cognac i believe. I have
found some sort of manual that says that on the installation of a pci
video card the onboard video is supposed to be automatically disabled.
Of course, when i do install the PCI card, the onboard is not enabled
and the card doesn't work. There's no option in the bios about
changing the display. Any suggestions in getting this to work?
