my ethernet controller is giving me an error in device manager.
device will not start (code 10)

i just got proper drivers from HP for chipset, and for the nvidia ethernet controller. everything installed fine.
after getting error code, i followed troubleshooter, emailed hp again asking for assistance, and started a re-install of xp for a clean slate.

im installing over vista on a hp slimline s3027c.

any suggestions as to how i can get this to work?

Email from hp gave me wlan drivers . . . ?
told me to troubleshoot, and reinstall drivers that really dont apply to my ethernet.
but whatever, so i try troubleshooting, again. install drivers, try and update, but it says the drivers i have in are better then the new ones. restart, nothing.
checked bios, onboard lan enabled, os plug n play enabled, onlt thing disabled is cd boot for lan.

yea, this is turning out to gimme one hell of a headache.
googled issue, and as of page 7, nothing useful yet.

so hp sent me to microsoft, and microsoft sent me to hp.

all i find out is this,

If the device has a FailReasonString value in its hardware key, that string appears as the error message. The driver or enumerator puts this registry string value there. If there is no FailReasonString in the hardware key, you receive the following error message:
This device cannot start. (Code 10)

i dont seem to be gettin any help here, so ima just keep posting untill i figure this out. hopefully it will help someone else later down the road.
i searched microsoft.com, and found older versions of drivers, and ima reinstall os again, clean slate, and start installing the oldest drivers first, n keep updating untill i find something that works.
i personally dont think its a driver problem though.

    ran trouble shooter,
    installed drivers,
these were not the correct drivers i believe, as it informed me that there is no better driver then the one i currently

have installed. That and I installed ethernet controllers, and not wireless lan controllers.
attempted wiping os, reinstalling os, then reinstalling drivers, but same problem with ethernet controllers. code 10.
    Also missing drivers for
-802.11bg wlan, assumed last sent drivers might work for that, but unfortunetly not.
    -pci simple communications controller
    -video controller (vga compatable)
accessed bios and os plug and play enabled,
    onboard lan enabled
    lan boot disabled
so basiclly, the ethernet drivers have been accepted, but device will not start.
does not read connection when ethernet is plugged into port.
i am reinstalling the OS again for a clean slate, default bios. i will install the chipset drivers originally suggested as
