Combining smaller tiles into a longer image

I have a cron job that picks a random sequence of .JPG files
for IMG tags on a web page. Unfortunately, the widths vary
and the results are sometimes screwy.

Is there a shell-callable tool that can take a list of images,
the same height and PPI, and turn them into a single long image
    of that height?

OR a way to do it on the webserver with perl CGI or embedded PHP ?

  2. ImageMagick springs to mind. It may not do exactly what you want, but
it is sort of the swiss-army tool of image manipulation.
