Compaq Armada M700 Boot/Shutdown Problem

When I shutdown my laptop after it's been running for awhile it will just hang at the XP shutdown screen and then if I try to hard reboot it it will just hang at the Compaq/F12=Network Service Boot screen. I've tried pulling the battery out and letting it be for awhile but it's been chronically like this for the last couple of weeks.

IS my laptop about to die? or is it a software error?
