Compaq Evo 600c Shift Key problem

    I bought my daughter a used 600c laptop that she only uses for internet chatting. Every so often BOTH shift keys stop working. I try everything to get them working again (over the phone as she lives in another state) but nothing seems to work. Then all of a sudden they seem to work on their own for a couple of weeks. She has cleaned the keyboard but I doubt that is the issue as the both stop at the same time. The laptop is running XP and other than this is working great. Any ideas would be very welcome!!!
