Does anyone know exactly what is the update to the "Dell Desktop
System Software" - what it does and whether it is necessary to install
    this update?

    See:

    http://support.dell.com/support/dow...tegory=0&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=6317&devlib=7

    In the description:
"Desktop System Software (DSS) is a utility that provides
critical updates and patches for your operating system."

    - but isn't this done by microsoft / windows update?

This is the equivelent of windows update, but it updates dell device
drivers, and dell supplied software. MS doesnt do that.
