DELL Latitude XPi CD notebook - hard disk controller 1 failure, huh?

    Last night it was working fine - this morning I get, "hard disk
    controller 1 failure" during POST. And then it gives, "F1 to continue
    - F2 for Setup" and will go into setup.

    BIOS reports 'internal hard disk' = '0' (zero), is if it can't find
    it.

    If booted to DOS using a floppy the CDROM drive will access the files
    and directories on the CD. Incidently, the CDROM then has become C:,
    and the hard drive has disappeared.

    Has my hard disk gone the way of the 'great bit-bucket in the sky' or
    is it the controller?
