I've been able to make disk copies in Jaguar by simply dragging a disk
over the disk copy icon -- it copies the disk name and all. I can't
figure out how to do that in Panther.

Panther's got disk copy as part of disk utility, and when I click on the
disk image function, it asks me to fill in the name of the disk and
after I do that, it starts imaging but immediately stops with an error
message, no matter what setting I select (compressed or not, encrypted
or not, etc.). Is it that it doesn't know what disk to copy? I can't
figure it out. Any insight will be greatly appreciated.

  2. Have you considered sharing what the error message says? That might
    contain a clue.

Insert the disk. Start up Disk Utility. Select the disk you want to copy
(in that area down the left side of the DU window). Choose Images > New
