I don't think I posted this problem in this NG, and if I did (my
    apologies for the repeat post)

I have a Dim. 8200 desktop and I have been mystified as to why
download.com is not loading... ever. I emailed cnet and back and forth
we went through ever possibility and then they finally said "well maybe
your ISP is blocking you becuase we aren't" (or something to that
effect). THEN I called Road Runner and I went through a series of tests.
Pinging download.com gave positive results back.

cnet.com comes up fine, and all the other tabs that are on that site
    will load but not download.com

At some point a tech at RR said something about the problem may be
    related to my ethernet card?

    <raised eyebrow>

  2. are you running any firewall or content management software? disable it and
try again. if it works then look into the configuration of that software.
if you are trying with internet explorer you could reset everything back to
    defaults and try again?
you could download/install firefox to see if that also demonstrates the
    problem.
there are many malware programs that block certain sites, but i have not
heard of download.com being one of them.

Try checking your hosts file (it has no file extension like .txt) :

    c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc

My firewall settings are as they have always been. I reformatted the C:
drive and reinstalled windows XP home. I tried IE, FF, Opera and K-Meleon.

    Still, no Download.com

I could not get to DL.com with the original hosts. I changed it to the
MVPS hosts file, and then I just removed the entire section devoted to
    cnet.com and still no DL.com

this computer is cursed! I bought it used, I wonder what is going on.
Can a hacker sell a machine that's hardwired to be a zombie? (I'm
digressing a little bit, but seriously! this is weird)

I assume you can get there with neither IE or Firefox?

extension for firefox now? Or maybe a Priest... lol

Wow this is amazing. Hmmm... I guess I'll have to stick to filehippo and
    zdnet

Yeah, it takes you to cnet - according to samspade.org its where it
resolves to - try the "download" link at the top to go to the
    download.com site

    If you can see one but not the other, i`m stumped :-}

    did you try a tracert?
go to a dos command, and issue:
    tracrt download.com
this will trace the route of the packet and tell you the last ip address
    it gets stuck at.
it sounds like a firewall issue, or hosts. file issue.

so that proves that your packets are reaching them, but the response is
    not reaching you.
so your incoming firewall is stopping it.
    did you check your firewalls?
    what are you running?
