Duplicate Desktop icons in Panther?

    I'm running 10.3.3 and all of a sudden am getting duplicate icons on the
    Desktop. If I drag an icon from one position to another, the action may
    duplicate one of the other icons on the Desktop (so there are 2 or more
    icons representing the same file). The duplicates also appear when I
    look at the Desktop in list view. If I delete one of the duplicates, the
    others disappear also. Only one seems to be in the Trash, but if I then
    drag that back to the Desktop then both reappear.

    What's going on and how can I fix it?
