Hello,

I use Windows 2000 SP4. My Motherboard is BE6-II. In the device manager I have something called Hpt366 Ultra DMA 66 Controller and under that IBM-DTLA -307015 SCSI Disk device.

The last days when I have shut down my PC, I have had this error in the event viewer: Event-Id 11, Sorce: disk, type: error and description: The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk1\DR3.

In fact, I have more than 30 of these messages when I shut down the Computer.

Is this something serious? Besides from the messages, I haven't noticed any problems at all.

Any help would be appreciated.

I would not give it a second thought. the Highpoint controller was known for logging messages in the Event Viewer and most often, there were no issues associated with said messages.

Thanks, good to hear it's probably nothing to worry about.

Strange though that these messages come after 3,6 years! The only things I have done lately is changing anti virus program and applying some Windows hotfixes.

the hotfixes could easily have had an impact on the Highpoint controller... you might even want to check and make sure the version of the driver has not been changed somehow but, again, I have seen all sorts of events logged, including timeout errors and stuff that you would think is a problem, meanwhile, the system is running fine and no data is corrupted or otherwise lost.

Thanks again

Hi Fredrik.

I have almost exactly the same problem, but on a completely different motherboard.

I see error messages like "The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Ide\IdePort0." in the System Event log. But I also notice a horrible degradation in performance. My CPU usage goes through the roof and in performance monitor my %DiskTime is at 100% or close to it.

I was thinking I had a bad drive, but it's been working fine up until now. One thing is that the drive, a 120 GB Maxtor, is about 85% full, and I'm downloading from sometimes two or three sites at once, so the drive is definitely getting a workout. But when so many CPU cycles are going to the HDD, something is wrong.

I'm also on Windows 2000 SP4 with all the latest updates, which seems to be the thing in common between our system. Is your hard drive full and very fragmented, like mine is? I wonder if that's the problem. I was using the nVidia IDE drivers when this problem started. I've since gone with the default Windows 2000 IDE driver and things have only gotten worse.
