Extenral PS2 keyboard with PS2->USB adapter

I just got a T43 and want to connect my PS2 keyboard to it.
There's only USB on the laptop so I hooked up a small adapter (notice,
small, not one of these 30$ ones).

    Naturally enough, it doesn't work.

I have a friend who keeps claiming it should be able to work, but then
why do they sell ones for 30$...

Has anybody solved this without purchasing one of the expensive
adapters (or a new USB keyboard) ?

I tried some of those small adapters with a HP keyboard that had the
PS/2 connector on a desktop PC and they didn't work for me either. I
am not sure what the deal is with that.
