Gateway GT4016 mixing 512MB and 1GB RAM?

I just bought a GT4016. It comes with 4 memory slots, two of which are filled with 512MB modules. Can I add 1GB modues to the other two slots, or do all of the modules have to be the same size? Has anyone done this with success? TIA
