this is a dell newsgroup so who cares about gateway? besides how many
mergers did you ever see that did not result in the lose of many jobs?

I suppose the implicit question is, are those job cuts going to be because
the jobs in question were superfluous or redundant, or are the jobs going
elsewhere? that would be a reason people in this group care. many are not
terribly happy with the tide of jobs going overseas for various reasons...

  3. it is over a 1/4 of their workforce. just a couple of months ago they
forecasted having a couple of hundred more employees by mid 2004 (perhaps
referring to the then potential emachines purchase) now they are saying they
will have less than 75% of what they had in 2003 (mid 7,400 at end of 2003
reduced to the mid 5000 in the next few months, currently already reduced to
about 6500). the cfo said it was in part due to the "ongoing evolution of
outsourcing started in Q3 and Q4" of 2003. they have not been making any
money for some time and something had to happen... the beginning of the
end? i think so. whatever happens to them, they will not be the same
gateway that we used to know.

  6. i don't wish for gateways demise as i believe that competition is god for
the consumer, but i also recognize that years of bad management takes it
    toll on a company.

as for you, why the new name? ashamed of your past behavior? and why do you
still behave like this? are you aware that you hurt your own cause with this
    sort of behavior.

  7. Might have to do with consolidating their eMachines purchase.

  9. Ah press releases, from PR News no less. As a journalist, I am very
skeptical of them. Could be that this news of layoffs inidcate that they
have now made some decisions on the matter. It is an uncommon merger or
acquisition that does not involve layoffs.

  10. that's how i read it too. after these 2,000 people go, then they will
consider how many heads will roll at emachines...
