Hey, guys.
I have an Abit BG7 mobo. Lately I've noticed when I do anything processor-intensive (games, for example), I would get a temperature alarm from the motherboard. Shortly (a second or two) after exiting the game, the alarm would stop. A quick google search made it sound like my heatsink wasn't making good contact with the processor. While removing the heatsink, a couple pieces of plastic fell out and I noticed that the plastic cage around the processor - the one that the heatsink clips to - was broken. The top of the four slots where the heatsink tabs clip into had broken, leaving nothing for the clip to attach to on that corner. A search of googlegear's heatsinks doesn't turn up anything. Anyone know where I can buy just that plastic cage itself that mounts to the motherboard? I might be able to figure out something with tie-wraps/zip-ties but I'd rather just replace the cage.

Thanks.

Hi
I'm not sure where in the world you are, but there are folk selling these retainers, I goggled about 20 pages worth of info but Its quite hard picking the ones who have what you need.

Heres a URL http://www.nexfan.com/socpuco.html

I'm sure you can find a place near you who can help. Alos it may be worth a e-mail to Abit tech support......

Good Luck

Sounds like you've broken the heatsink retention module. Try searching ebay for them. Failing that email me cos I've got a load here in the UK for sale.

http://www.excaliberpc.com/ sells CPU fan mounts for ABIT motherboards for $6 plus shipping. Don't know if there is a minimum order. www.abit-usa.com links Excaliber from their site under /Products/Parts and Accessories.

Same happened to me. Just write an email to Abit Support. They will help you. I got a new one within a week for free. Greetings Stefan

Okay, thanks.
I see a few of those around now.
The obvious next question is - if I wanted to do away with the Intel heatsink/fan, would I still need that cage? Or are there others that could mount to the 478 socket (not that there's a lot of room to mount)? A local mom&pop computer shop here told me today that the plastic cage would cost me $15 (yeah, I'd rather buy it online for $6 but then there's shipping...). I figure I could get a whole new heatsink/fan for not much more than that, but not sure if it still needs that broken piece or not.
