Hey to anyone reading this. Abit tech support haven't replied yet and I've not got anywhere with Seagate tech support. I have an abit IS7 board with P4 2.4G. I got it along with a Radeon 9700pro and got setup with both overclocked (3ghz and above stock radeon settings). After getting "rest to 640x480 or somin crap and give 'windows recovered from a device error'" messages I put the radeon abck to stock, and I thought it was solved but I still got them. I'm now running the p4 at stock too and haven't had them since - any ideas? I then bought a new 160G SATA drive (ST3160023AS) and had all sorts of trouble. I used discwizard to set it up and make it my boot partition so it copied my OS to it and rebooted etc. I had to make my PATA drive the SLAVE on IDE1, with my SATA on "IDE 3". But the OS was dodgy so I had to setup a frseh install. (Running winxp pro btw). To setup fresh I have to unplug my PATA else the SATA is always seen as D. After setting up I plugged my PATA back in. A couple days went by, and the problem was excessive slowdown to do anything - 2 minutes to boot up, black sceren pauses for 20 seconds or so before even loading the xp bootup screen, IE pausing for a few minutes before it starts to work - general crapness. I tried to bootup with my PATA unplugged to see if that was effecting things. No difference. But then it got worse! Now I can't even connect the power back to my PATA else it simply won't boot! It hangs with the black screen of pause before the XP boot logo, but I left it there all day and it still didn't boot, so I know it's beyond 'delayed'. Now - I'm sure if I boot off PATA or SATA alone it runs fine, so can anyone help or point me in a better source of help?! My 80G PATA I need back!!!!!

I would suggest that you not overclock either the video or the cpu until you have a good feel for how the system is performing and whether it is behaving itself when clocked at normal speeds.

Many times the problems with these boards are related to memory issues and people get around that by raising the ram voltage to around 2.7 and not leaving the ram timing on "By SPD" and instead, setting the timing manually. start with the timing up at the highest numbers and then bring them back down step by step.

be sure to set IDE Bus Master to enabled and that frequently helps. your system could also be getting confused with more than one bootable partition on it but I doubt that.

Thanks for the reply =) here's some more!

I would suggest that you not overclock either the video or the cpu

until you have a good feel for how the system is performing and

whether it is behaving itself when clocked at normal speeds.

I spent about a week setting this up, and got the cpu upto 3G no problems and got the radeon stable too. Things were definitely stable. Compared to win98se which just laughed and bluescreen it's face off until I unwillingly went to xpp. I figured the device errors were graphics related, as the screen was reset to crap mode et al. Would any device error cause those effects though? Both are back at stock.

Many times the problems with these boards are related to memory issues

and people get around that by raising the ram voltage to around 2.7

and not leaving the ram timing on "By SPD" and instead, setting the

timing manually. start with the timing up at the highest numbers and

then bring them back down step by step.

Just before I bought this SATA my cpu had somehow gone wrong and reset it's settings in the bios so I left them at stock, and my HD would boot fail unless I entered the bios (no action needed inside) then exited. I got extra scared to get my SATA in quick. And before anyone writes off my old hd, I've had that running an os install ok since then, and have also accessees both drives at the same time. But now anymore. I'm not even sure what my bios timings are set to now. *runs cpuz* ahah. Here they are. I've got 2 256M 3200's in dual.

RAM Frequency 200.5 MHz

CAS# Latency 2.5 clocks

RAS# to CAS# 3 clocks

RAS# Precharge 3 clocks

Cycle Time (TRAS) 8 clocks

plugged to see if that was effecting things. No difference. But

be sure to set IDE Bus Master to enabled and that frequently helps.

your system could also be getting confused with more than one bootable

partition on it but I doubt that.

Not sure what you mean about IDE Bus Master, I'd have to look in the bios again to see which one it was. V16 bios I got recently is already changing names around from previous ones so the manuals aren't right etc =P Where would I find what I need to check on the new layout? I gets a bit confusing in there now names have changed again ...

I have a copy of the newer manual that can be downloaded from my server at the address below under /manuals. The IDE Bus Master setting is on the Integrated Peripherals and then Onchip IDE Device, I believe.

can't really speculate about the video issues except to say that this is usually driver related. remember what I said about the ram in my previous post.

ok I got the (new?) manual, cheers. But I've got IDE Bus master turned on - but I HAVE now learnt the problem, I just have no solution! The details are this - if I have the SATA controller set to auto, with the PATA connected, it sets the SATA to IDE 3+4. If I try to boot, I get no luck. If I reboot and disconnect the PATA however, the setting that was auto to IDE 3+4 changes to IDE1+2, hence, what was IDE3 becomes IDE1 master, and it boots off it ok. If I disconnect my PATA but set the SATA thing not to auto but to enhanced (IDE 3+4) and try to boot, sure enough, it won't boot! So basically, PATA or not, I cannot make it boot with my damn boot volume as IDE 3 on SATA 1, andI doubt making it IDE 4/SATA 2 would make any difference. So - what the hell?! (My IDE2 has a master/slave burner/dvd already so can't put my PATA on IDE 2). But I KNOW that it is possible to boot off my SATA and still have my PATA connected on IDE 1 slave with my STA as IDE 3. I can't remember the occasions it must have happened, but it must have, else I couldn't ahve seen bothd rives at the same time apart from when I had to isntall to my PATA just so I could wipe the one on my SATA (originally copied there from the PATA by disc wizard). So it looks like the problem is the bios or whatever is now UNABLE in v16 to boot off SATA1 as IDE3, whether my PATA is connected to IDE1 or not. It has to be SAT1 set to IDE1 to boot. No way! I can't do that as I have 3 IDE devices. What has abit done?! Seagate tech support basically abandoned me and said it wasn't their problem, and abit uk and abit us tech support haven't even replied! I'm now into my 2nd week of no access to my PATA! This is totally unacceptable, I'm wishing I'd bought a damn PATA now =(

have you been setting the boot priority on the Advanced Bios screen? on my IC7-G, I boot from SATA (ICH-5 SATA 1 & 2) and have had drives on PATA as well.

Hi
I am having very similar problems with a IS7_E.
The Sata drive will not boot without the Pata set as the first priority. There is nothing on it and it shows up as drive D but it still has to be present for the Sata to work. The sata drive still occasionally refuses to boot until the bios is reset This is totally unacceptable and Abit should not be releasing new motherboards in this crappy state. As for sata drives! they are a waste of money. Paul

I've gone into the boot list thing yes, and made sure SATA is top and PATA is bottom and bootable addin device is middle (or swapp PATA and BAD around keeping SATA first) naturally. But basically in the bios you set your SATA1 to be either IDE1, 2, 3, 4 or auto. I set it to auto. If I plug the PATA in, it is IDE1 slave and the auto sets my SATA to ide3. It won't boot. If I don't plug the PATA in, the auto sets my SATA to ide1 and it appears sure enough as IDE1 master and it boots (the only way to boot atm!!). If I don't plug the PATA in but manually set the SATA to IDE3, it shows up as IDE3 and failed to boot off it even with the PATA disconnected of course. Argh! BASically my bios appears UNABLE to boot from a SATA set ot IDE3, whether there is a PATA connected elsewhere or not - THIS is my problem, and I'm using the latest v16 bios, wish I wasn't now =( Help anyone? I need my damn PATA back asap it has business on it!!!!!!! Why hasn't abit uk/us even replied to me?! What service is that!

generally, Abit relies on these news groups to provide support. there are some web based forums as well for support.

on my IC7-G, I set the SATA mode to enhanced and SATA is IDE 3 & 4 and PATA is IDE 1 & 2. I then set the priority to bootable add-in device, I believe but I'll have to drop down to the bios and check real quick.

the two boards (IS7 and IC7) are essentially the same in this area although there may be differences in the Intel SATA bios that I am not aware of.

do you have the SATA in Raid mode with the raid bios enabled? that might make a difference in how the system boots as you are still able to have a regular SATA drive in non-raid mode on the channels even though the raid mode and bios is enabled. I'll check my bios real quick and see what my boot priority is set to...

okay, the section that says Hard Disk Priority is set to Bootable Add-In Device. Under the Hard Disk Priority selection is an indented selection that is titled Bootable Add-In Device and that is set to Onchip SATA Raid (I have a SATA Raid 0). then the first boot device is floppy, then CDROM, then hard disk and boot other device is enabled.
