Guys,

I currently have my stable system set up like this:

Intel 2.8 800FSB
Abit IC7-G latest Bios
1GB 400FSB memory
Maxtor 80GB (WinXp Pro) IDE 1 Master, Yamaha CDRW IDE 1 slave Sony 510U IDE 2 Master, Lite On DVD IDE 2 slave 2 Maxtor 40 GB on Intel SATA Raid 0 with the Seriell Connectors.

I have bought 2 Maxtor 120GB SATA drives and want to put them on the Intel SATA, Raid 0, and move the Maxtor 40GB to the Silicon SATA RAID. I then want to load a fresh copy of XP Pro on the Intel SATA.

My question is the correct way to do this. Will I have problems loading the new XP to the Intel SATA with a copy of XP still resident on the IDE 1 Maxtor 80GB drive? Should I remove this drive during installation? I need to transfer some files off it at some point.

Will I have to set up the BIOS prior to loading the system and which settings?

Should I load the SATA drivers (F5) when loading XP so it will recognize the drives?

Thanks in advance.

There is a really good guide to doing all this in the abit forums:
http://forum.abit-usa.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=13204 But back to your question: you shouldn't have any problems putting XP on the new RAID array. I actually just did that myself on my IS7-G. You'll need a few things first (it's all in the guide) 1) get floppy with the intel raid drivers for xp setup (it's F6 btw, NOT F5) 2) burn everything you'll need to update with to a CD to use 3) print out the guide and OS install guide before you start.

I'm sure you've installed XP before, but I'd really suggest reading the OS install guide also. You'll get a better system out of it in the end.

you will need to download the newest version of bios for the board, the newest F6 floppy based drivers from Intel (I have them on my site as well) and the newest Intel Applications Accelerator - Raid version (IAA-R). The F6 floppy based driver is used during the install of the OS by hitting F6 to signal that you have third party raid drivers to install so the OS install can continue.

Will I have to set up the BIOS prior to loading the system and which settings?

yes, you need to flash to the newest bios so you don't have problems with drive detection and such and then there are specific settings that will need to be made. Onchip SATA to Enhanced mode with Bus Master enabled at the top of that same screen and the raid mode and raid rom enabled. then you will need to look at the boot device priority to set that for booting to the SATA drive or raid array.

Should I load the SATA drivers (F5) when loading XP so it will recognize the drives?

that's F6 not F5.

Thanks in advance.

Paak,

The two previous posts gave you very good info and you should be able to load XP just fine if you follow their suggestions.

As for your question about having XP on a drive connected to the IDE connectors ... connect the drive AFTER you load XP on your SATA setup. However, you may run into an issue similar to an experience I just had.

I tried something similar to what you are trying to do and it did not work for me on an IS7. I had a Raptor on SATA1 and did a fresh load of XP with SP 1 onto it. Once the system finally booted and looked stable I tried to connect a Maxtor drive from the old system with XP on it to copy off some data files. When ever the Maxtor drive was connected to either the IDE1 or IDE2 connectors, XP failed to boot from the Raptor and the monitor screen was blank. I had to remove the XP install on the Maxtor with a utility called Delpart before XP would boot the Raptor drive on SATA1 with the Maxtor on the IDE.

I must also mention at that time I was having problems with XP seeing all the CD drives and the Maxtor drive. Plus, I was not able to boot in the Enhanced mode at the time, it would only boot with OnChip Serial ATA set to Auto. Finally, after using a tip from another post, I set IDE Bus Master to Enabled in the OnChip IDE device menu and was able to boot to the Raptor using the Enhanced mode which allowed XP to see all the IDE devices correctly.

I wish I would have read that post before I removed the XP install on the Maxtor drive because I'm not positive if the boot issue was because the boot loader saw two copies of XP or because I was not in the Enhanced mode. My best guess is you will have the same problem I did .. no boot and a blank screen because of the two copies of XP.

Give it a try, post back and let us know how it went.

Good Luck,
John

sounds like something happened with the F6 floppy... did you go to the Intel site (or to my server under /drivers) and DL the newest F6 floppy image creation tool and then create a new floppy?

I finally got around to loading XP on my SATA Raid drive. Following the tips in this post I had no problems. When I connected my old Maxtor back to the primary IDE it booted off of that instead of the new SATA drive the first 2 times. It then miraculously ignored the IDE and started booting off the SATA with the Maxtor hooked up on IDE. Go figure. Thanks for all the help. "Paak Waan" wrote:
