A friend without much money wants to buy a
    laptop.

She has a Dell desktop with a LAN connection.

With a cross over cable, would the new laptop
running XP Home create a home network for
    sharing files and the printer?

    Thanks,

  2. Yes. But, if she springs for another $70-$80, give or take, she could
pick up a DSL/Cable Router, say an SMC Barricade, that will have a
printer port in addition to the LAN/Cable/DSL connection capability.
Advantage of this is that *both* computers don't have to be on for the
one that isn't connected to the printer/LAN to be able to print or
web-surf, she'll only have to have both on when transferring/sharing
    files.

Would be much more efficient to use a hub and plus them both into that, you
can get a good basic 4-6 port ethernet hub for around $25-$40.
