Okay I've looked here and there for info on this problem.

Here is my configuration, and some history...

twin raptors on sata 1 and sata 2 (south bridge, on chip) twin wd 1200's on sata 3 and sata 4 (sil onboard pci) Sony DVD everything on IDE1

Started the beasty up and everything was going good...but dumb...C-: I rebooted and started to install XP (from the sony). Only made it to the "Do you want to install XP" message and I said no and rebooted. Then things started falling apart...hung at verfiying DMI pool...on restart...then went back into bios resetting to fail-safe deaults and putzed around trying to see if anything had changed. Have perturbed the bios between sata only, enhanced mode etc nothing much changes...

Kill the cmos?

Help??? C-:>

Thx,

More history...

It's working now, used combined, set sata1/2 to ide2 master/slave, successfully formated the first raptor (yippee!), then it would not reset (booohooo) with same old dmi pool message, AHA a SWAG changed hdd boot priority from bootable device, sata1, sata2 TO sata1, sata2, bootable device and WALA it's magic am now booted and installing XP...of course I still have to figure out how to raid 1 the twins so I'll most likely have to reformat blah blah blah...but there is progress...

BTW what are the names of the Coor's Light Twins? I think I'll use them as the volume name(s) C-:< for the raptors...

More later...with better documentation...:-C

it won't even boot to a CD any more? I'd say it is a no brainer to clear the CMOS but I don't understand what you could have done by aborting the install of the OS to cause that.

your CD-ROM is still in the boot order and all?

if you were going to raid the Raptors, you should have done it before you got going with the OS but that would be even more true with raid 0 than raid
1. who knows, maybe it will let you get away with mirroring the drive without any problem.

No it would not strangely enough...the bootable add-in device (pci slot device) seems to have been the culprit. I moved it from the top to the bottom of the bootable list and then the boot would proceed...I put the raptors in front of it...I did not change the boot order from the setting that I had changed to (hdd, cdrom, floppy). Maybe I need to disable boot other device??? duh?!

I have my fingers crossed about the raid1 setup...I need to upgrade the bios to the latest anyway and when I do hopefully it will give me the option to do so...YEAH RIGHT...that's okay I'm learning about the system...figure I'll have to tear it down and rebuild a few times before I get it close to right. FUN?

yeah, the "bootable add-in PCI devices" setting is allowing you to boot to a hard drive controller that was added to the system or similar device. the Raptors at the top are what is needed. I would not, personally, disable the boot other device setting, because then you would not be able to boot to a CDROM drive or floppy.

with the advent of the IC7/IS7 and, I am sure, others like them with onboard SATA mixed with onboard IDE, the bios takes on a whole new layer of complexity to set up what devices can get boot priority.
