I have a IC7-G MB with a P4 3 MHz CPU cooled by a Vantech Aeroflow HSF. It has shut down several times over the last two days without much of a warning. I was not overclocking the CPU when this happened. Only once did I see a window before the lights went out. That window said something about the CPU temp being too high.

I routinely have the Hardware Doctor running and the CPU temp it shows is never over 52 C. I have noticed though that the temp shown in that part of Bios dealing with temps, etc. is higher.

Any idea of what is up?

try disabling any of the bios level cpu warnings and shutdowns for cpu temp. also, I'd try running Motherboard Monitor over HW Doc. as it is a much better app and still freeware...

Have the same problem with mine but I had a bios alarm set to 50 degrees, my cpu idles at 43c yet on a gigabyte ga-8ik1100 and an asus p4p800 deluxe with my 2.8/800 p4 and the vantech aeroflow they idled around the 30 degree mark. This is the hottest my p4 has run on a mobo. I will try the original Intel stock heatsink to see if that makes any difference in temp.

Well here's an update

The temps are about the same on idle but i wonder how reliable the temp moniter on the ic7-g board is. To have a 10c jump in temp with a change of mobo does seem quite high to me.

I have an IC7/Aeroflow combo. This board is known to report temps about 10-12C higher than others. Abit's advice is to set the cpu temp shutdown/alarm to 85C and forget about it.

My 2.4g overclocked to 3.3g with 1.575V idles at 47C and tops out at 60C.

One thing I've noticed about Hardware Doctor is that it doesn't know what to make of the TMD fan on the Vantec. Readings jump around a bit, even when the fan noise tells me it's running at a steady speed. (As TomG said, MBM5 is a better monitoring utility, and it says my Aeroflow is turning at 5500+ rpm.)

As an experiment, you might try disabling the bios setting for shutdown on fan failure and see if the problem disappears.

There's a discussion on temps and the abit boards on the forums at the abit web site. In a nut shell the abit boards seem to report the CPU temps at 10 degress higher than what is commonally expected. Abit claims this is because they measure the temps from diodes inside the CPU instead of in the socket and it's normal for them to be higher.

Anyway, My box is hot too, it's an IS7. Seen the CPU
up to 75 under heavy load until I put in better cooling, but I still see 65 under load.
