Heelllppp!!!

Just replaced my SOYO Fire Dragon with the a new Abit IC7-G, 3.2GHz P4 and 2 sticks of Corsair memory. I'm not trying to overclock, just using default settings.

My system uses removable IDE drives, one WD800, one WD600, and one IBM DeskStart 75GXP. All these have bootable Win2K partitions.

I am using the regualr IDE channel, not SATA.

I have been able to get the WD800 to boot WIn2k, but the other two drives will not boot. On boot, I get an boot error (NON SYSTEM DISK) It boots OK to a floppy disk.

It appears that the mobo is not auto-detecting the drives correctly. When I load Partition Magic in DOS, PM reports that the drive was partitioned using a different specification. So it looks like the mobo is using the wrong cylinders, heads, sectors for these 2 drives. According to Hitachi/IBM, the Deskstar should be 16383 cylinders, 16 heads, 63 sectors, but these settings don't show up in the drive configuration in the BIOS.

help help help help

that might be because the ARC path could have changed with the new hardware arrangement. I'm surprised you can get any of the partitions to boot...

really, please, someone help me here. I'm completely out of ideas here.

I don't know anything about ARC paths, but I know these drives were in my COmpaq system, then moved to my Soyo system. All drives were recognized fine by the Soyo mobo.

I've read that ARC paths have to deal will things like the boot.ini file etc..

The WD600 and Deskstar drives don't even show up when I boot to DOS from a floppy. The only drive I have available in DOS is A:

if the drives don't show in DOS, then they are either NTFS drives that DOS cannot show or the bios is not enumerating the drives. in the latter case, it is hard to imagine that the bios is not seeing the drives but you could easily verify that by watching the boot screens and when the table that shows the detected devices come up you should see the drives there and you should also see them declared before that table when the IDE channels are displayed.

TomG ...

I guess I have to 'ask' ...
. are =all= HDs mounted at once ... OR, one at a time ... .. presumably in IDE Rack/Tray units ... ??? . at/upon "boot" , is the 'mounted' r/t HD properly recognized in the CMOS tbl .. and in the bootup display , as you mention. .. Bum/no re_enumeration ???

The 'fact' that "one" booted, the others not ...
... =assuming= only one(1) HD mounted at a time ....
suggests , as you say, that a few boot "pointers" dont function , but "why" ???

Interesting ... but a PIA for the 'OP'.

OP's post ...

As a "Side Note" :
I have 2 extrnl R/T units ... several HDS in trays, on the 'bench' ... =all= of same HD mfgr/model ... no 'differing' HDs ...

I can mix & match & boot successfully
BUT ...
using a multi_booter, "it" muxt be mounted as the primary boot drv if I wish to use it as such ... else ... the 'mounted'( in a tray) HD has to be bootable . =NO= hot-swop, btw ...

Added, I can mount only one(1) HD, in one rack, and also boot ... 2nd rack remaining empty ... no mounted 2nd tray+HD ...

top-posted like human scum... you know, you bring up a good point. I don't know if he has all of the drives mounted up and enabled at the same time or not. my approach assumed that the drivers were all "alive" at the same time.

Yahhh ...
I decided to become "Green" ... and 'scum it' ...
got sick of all the slimy_ooze types at the 'bottom'.
:-)

Per the 'OP' ...
. 1 of 3 booted ... 'assumed' booted HD in CMOS drv tbl . 2 of 3 never 'showed' in DOS ... HDs decidedly not in CMOS tbl

I had an 'inkling', early on, "that" mite a problem ... side_stepped the issue with 'all_alike' HDs ... 'LCS', like a good "POL" .

I wonder if the 'OP' mite try an HD re_probe on "one",
and go from 'there' ...
if the boot 'sees' the HD, & the '.ini' is good, ... mite work.

Seems a PIA way to "go" , tho ...

OHhh shit!
