Has anyone managed to get RAID 0+1 working on an IC7-G / Win XP Pro?

I have just "invested" almost my entire weekend and while I have learned a lot about RAID & the IC7-G, I am no further in my quest for 4 x Seagate 160 Gb S-ATA disks in a 0+1 configuration.

I have installed the Intel V3.5 software, but it mentioned a BIOS upgrade needed, and some features may be disabled? (I am running Abit v15) I was *NOT* able to get the Intel RAID to do anything but RAID 0.

The other IC7-G RAID controller will allow itself to be configured for 0 or 1, good.

As the IC7-G does not do (to my knowledge) 0+1 in hardware, if I can get the Intel to do hardware RAID 1, as I already have the other controller doing RAID 1, then I can RAID 0 the two in software using Win XP Pro, though I think the Boot partition might have to live on a dedicated partition? (I would consider RAID 5, though XP Pro never presents this option to me, only "standard", "spanned" & "Striped" (never mirrored or RAID-5. Alternatively if i could get XP Pro to do raid 1 in software, I could RAID 0 the disks in hardware).

Any help gratefully received...

If you have successfully implemented a RAID 0+1 configuration using the IC7-G & Win XP Pro, or alternatively if you have successfully implemented a RAID 1 configuration using the Intel RAID controller, please post now :)

Thanks guys, may my weekend not be in vain...

a quick look on page 1-1 of the manual would have told you that you are wasting your time trying to get the Intel SATA controller to do raid 1. it only does raid 0, end of story.

Hi mate thanks for looking at my message.

Are you saying even if I install the Intel 3.5 drivers etc. The (Abit) Intel hardware won't do RAID 1 till Abit update their BIOS or ROM's so?

The Intel page says:

Intel Application Accelerator RAID Edition provides support for Serial ATA RAID 0 & RAID 1 on select Intel 865 and 875 chipset-based PCs with ICH5R.

Mr x

ps, If I am stuck in RAID 0 land, does anyone know how to RAID 1 in software using Win XP Pro? The Windows "New Volume Wizard" only shows "Simple", "Spanned" & "Striped". No Mirror or RAID-5 :(

would you just take a look at your manual? you did get a manual with the board, right? if you did, it is right on page 1-1!

Tom,

I have lost you.

When the IC7 was released, it was widely known that Intel had not completed their driver work on the ICH5R and that RAID 1 would follow......

Isn't the IC7 manual due for an update, with the release of IAA RAID version 3.5 ? What physically is on (or absent from) the IC7 that would prevent IAA version 3.5 enabling RAID 1on the ICH5R?

Of course, the updated SATA RAID driver would have to be loaded from the new floppy following a F6 re-install of Win XP, which is probably the missing step causing RAID 1 not to work at all for the Original Poster...............

( I do not use RAID myself, but just trying to logically piece together the RAID info provided by Bill Drake and others )

okay, I might be in error here. there is an updated manual (version 1.1 or
1.01... something like that...) on my ftp site that I was sent by Abit. it also shows raid 0 only on the Intel ICH5 controller.

Maybe Bill Drake is reading this thread and can shed some further light on the matter ?

Thanks.

It does seem that the consensus is that the system BIOS of the IS7 (and presumably the IC7) needs to be updated to support RAID 1. No official word from Abit on the matter ???

Hi, John. A couple of comments:

1. Please remember that the ICH5R controls only two SATA devices.

This means you can have a RAID0 Array created from two SATA devices *or* a RAID1 Array created from two SATA devices.

I *do not know* if Abit and/or SIL are going to support some sort of sharing-methodology which will allow a RAID Array of one type on the SIL controller to be backed-up by the complementary array on the ICH5R controller. This requires further investigation.

2. As mentioned on Page 25 of the "Intel Application Accelerator RAID Edition User's Manual - Revision 1.1" -- Version 3.5 companion support in the "Intel RAID Option ROM" section of the motherboard BIOS is
*required* if you wish to use any of the RAID1 features in the Version
3.5 Software.

Note: The "Intel RAID Option ROM" section of the motherboard BIOS is the functional equivalent to the "Highpoint BIOS" for the older Abit IDE-RAID motherboards.

Updates to the "Intel RAID ROM" must be integrated into the Abit motherboard BIOS just like the "Highpoint BIOS" for the IDE-RAID motherboards.

As a result, IC7 Owners will have to wait for Abit to release flashBIOS updates before full RAID1 support options become available for selection in the Intel RAID BIOS setup.

Hope this helps your understanding.

Best I can do for now. <tm>
