I am putting together the following -

Abit ic7-g
Antec Truecontrol 550 WATT PSU
Corsair 512MB twinx 3200 => 1GB
twin raptors (raid1 onchip)
twin wd1200 (raid0 sil)
Sony DVD Every-ding (IDE channel 1 master)
ATI AIW 9800 Pro
Floppy

OS - W2K Pro or W2003.net or XP Pro or Mandrake Linux

Well all the parts are in except the last two SATA data cables, those come in tomorrow. C-: I've installed everything and am waiting to turn it on until I get the data cables and decide on the OS. The consulting work I do will make the choice for me on the OS, I suspect W2k Pro. Some legacy issues with apps, compilers and codes used on the box.

Now what? I heard that groaning and laughing. C-:!!! I've much information thank you TomG among others here and on the forums. I've read the manuals and am just going to dive in, set the bios etc etc etc and see what happens...hopefully not making smoke or at least enough to make it worth my while...Bwaaahhh!

Is there a FAQ for the group? Any good advice? I'm a virgin on womb to tombing a computer. I've done most everything (or something like it) before but not end to end.

I'm going to write up my experiences and post them here, especially with the disk arrays. Maybe some other FNG will get something out of it...lifers as well with any luck.

Be gentle with me,

Sounds like you need Virtual PC with that mix of OS.
IE you will be able to run all of them at the same time... Excellent for software and deployment testing.

In order for Linux to recognize your SATA drives with your 875 chipset, you'll need a kernel with the following option enabled:

ATA | IDE block devices | Intel PIIXn chipsets support

This will also allow you to enable DMA transfers using hdparm.

If you're lucky, your stock kernel will come with this option enabled. I don't know anything about the Mandrake installer, but if it's smart enough it will take care of this for you. If not, you'll have to boot into Linux from floppy or CD, or else first install onto a PATA drive, and build a custom kernel there before you can even install onto your SATA drives. This is definitely doable, but probably not where you'd like to start with your new Linux installation.

Good luck,
Andrew.

Best of luck. You've done your homework, but in any such build you'll run into the unexpected sooner or later.

In addition to the smart and helpful souls in this NG, you might check the
Abit forums at http://forum.abit-usa.com/ where you'll find some good threads on setting up RAID and optimizing bios settings, etc.

Happy Trails

no FAQ's on this board that I am aware of... just dive in with what you have already learned and see what happens and post back
