What would be more interesting is putting two 'independent' disks with an additional drive/servo in one drive for a "built-in" raid array.

Technically quite feasible ...
but ...
the unit 'combo' mtbf suggests such a 'combo' mite be a poor maintenance choice if 'one' failure causes the combo(both) to fail.

Same reason the combo, sngl_ht 5.25/3.5" floppys never 'flew'.
