Hi
I've got comps with NF7 and ST6 mainboard, earlier I had BE6-II. Since I remember every model has had IRDA port onboard but to use it I must have that magic "something" with IR-led and IR-detector on the end to connect to port on the board. How actually this "something" is called and where can I get it (does Abit make the thing or it doesn't matter which manufacturer I'll support?:-) ) And when I get it eventually - how it works under i.e. WinXP ? Will it be seen as another serial port, or "special irda device"? Do I need any drivers?

The boards don't have an IRDa port on board, they have an IRDa header, to which you attach a port (the little circuit board with the IR sender and receiver on it).

You need an internal IRDa port.

and where can I get it (does Abit make the thing or it

Any internal port should do the job. You may have to reconfigure the cable to match the Abit header pinout, but that's just geography. I use an Asus IRM-100, which works fine.

And when I get it eventually - how it works under i.e. WinXP ? Will it be seen as another serial port, or "special irda device"?

Under WinXP it'll be seen as an infra red port. Putting any IR compatible device near it should make the OS auto-configure for file transfer.

Do I need any drivers?

Not for the port itself, it will PnP. You may need drivers for some of the third party devices you could use the port to communicate with. Printers for example would need a driver installed.

Control your PC or laptop by ordinary IR remote controller you use for your TV, CD,.. Especially useful for playing MP3, DVD's on PC. You can control functions of your favourite media player like volume, play, next, stop ... from the confort of your armchair, you don't need to come to your PC while watching dvd or playing mp3 to change volume ... All you need to do is to plug this piece of hardware to serial port and install free software and plugin downloaded from the Internet (or can be emailed on request). You can assign any button of your IR controler to any event on PC (volume, play, stop, close window, mouse moution, scroll ...) It does the same job as IRman. W95, 98, ME, 2000, XP compatible. A good new for Linux users - it's compatible with LIRC (www.lirc.org). It comes with 1.5m long cable.

Price : 9.90 GBP,

I accept cheques, Nochex, PayPal, PO's or direct bank transfer. P&P is 0.90 GBP (UK - 1st class recorded letter, next day delivery).

Thanks for info.
I know the Girder - I use it in another computer with IR receiver (just receiver) plugged into COM port but now I'd like to have full-featured IrDA port to communicate with laptop and cell phone. The problem is every model is 'on wire' external device - I hate that dozens of wires hanging down from my computer. I'm looking for something I can install in front chasis' panel.
