Hello - My P4 3.0G 800Mhz FSB CPU is running in my opinion very hot (50-55C under load) Intel lists the max temp on this chip at 70C so I am a bit from that and they say 50C is actually average. Can this temp be reduced with non-stock fans and heatsinks? I have been looking at various combos and the one that caught my eye was the Vantec TMD VP4-C7040 http://www.ajump.com/ajump/product.asp?pf%5Fid=8130013&dept%5Fid=3830 which claims a 15% reduction in temperature compared to a stock Intel Fan. Anyone using this fan and did you see a temp improvement???

Robert

that is a very normal temperature for the P4. My 2.8c running at just over
3.4 tops out at 61 or 62 under heavy gaming load. you might be able to lower the temperature some with an aftermarket heat sink as long as your case environment temperature is not getting too high as well. Take a look at the Zalman CNPS7000CU (AKA Zalman Flower) as that is a nice heat sink as well.

Your 'hot' CPU is running about midway between your system temp and the maximum operating temp. It will even go as high as 135C before it does a hard, protective shutdown and live another day.

At your current temperature, the CPU will probably burn out in ohhhhh.... 20 or 30 years.

I don't think I'd sweat it unless you start seeing temps approaching the mid-60s. The stock Intel fan on the 3.0C is actually quite good.

Quite normal.

The max listed by Intel is for full compliance with their timing specs NOT for reliability. You only need to worry about reliability at temps above 80 degrees C where a rule-of thumb is that the MTTR ( Mean time to failure) halves with each 10 degree C rise in temp above that figure.

Don't worry, be happy.

it is even a bit low :-) .... (depends of accuracy of the sensors & softvare)

Intel lists ...
thats long term (years) full load reliability guaranteed; temp taken from IHS & NOT from OnDie Cpu diode; there is at least 10°C bigger inside & than built in thermal throttling kicks in (but even than the temperature inside can reach peaks even 100°C IMHO )

Do not worry if the sistem is stable & save the money ...

Robert

in short nope. 2c under load better than intel stock.

...

I beg to differ. On my P4C 2.4 overclocked to 3.3 ghz, the stock Intel hsf, even lapped and using Arctic Silver III, was giving me 70C+ under torture testing with Prime95 and Sandra burn-in utility on my IC7 in a well-ventilated case.

With the Vantec Aeroflow, it does not go above 60C under the same conditions.

A little quieter than stock as well, and worth the $24 I paid for it.

I have a p4c 2.8 not overclocked mine tops out at 52c with the vantec and 54c with the Intel stock using artic silver 3 and a well ventilated case but I suppose every setup is different.

True, and it's the overclock that makes the difference. The Intel hsf is designed to be adequate at stock speeds. Overclocking adds heat, and it's at the high end that an aftermarket cooler makes the biggest difference.

In my situation, the 10C improvement in max temps was almost exactly the 15% reduction noted by the original poster.

There are some good cooler reviews and comparisons at www.overclockers.com that underscore the point.

The stock Intel hsf on the 3.0C and 3.2C is different and more effective than the version provided on the 2.4C-2.8C cpus. I believe it has a copper slug in the base, whereas the hsf for the slower cpus is all aluminum.

I have a 2.8C and replaced the stock hsf with a Zalman 7000alcu and got a 12C reduction in max temps. But if the max temps aren't getting over 60C, why bother spending the money?

Well we will see what happens as I have went ahead and ordered the fan and some Artic Silver 5 as I have been using some Radio Shack silicone heat transfer grease between the CPU and sink since Intel was too cheap to put a tube in the CPU box! I decided to get the Artic Silver 5 and for 22.00 more I got the fan as well. I am running about 55C average but under heavy load I have seen it go just above 60C. That being the case and it is darn cold in the house since the heater is not working and winter is here, I figure when summer comes I will be in big trouble unless I do something about the heat build up. I have two exhaust fans on the rear and one front intake fan, all three are 80mm at 27CFM. Am also considering replacing those three 80m fans with some Sunon 80m 50CFM. If that does not do it may be time to cut a hole in the side cover and mount a fan there blowing directly on the CPU!

Thanks for everyone's input so far!
