i have an abit is7-g... i currently have 2 cd drives (dvd rom and a dvd rw) connected to the intel ide

3 hard drives (booting fom a raid 0 array on silicon image (2 80gb wdjb drives) other drive is an 80gb wdjb on the intel

i would like to know if i should change this... put my raid array on the intel raid along with the cd drives and put my other drive on the silicone image controller? would it make any differance speed wise.. i heard the intel raid does not share bandwidth with the pci bus so would assume it would be faster but i would have to leave my cd drives on the intel chipset as well... dont know if that effects raid performance or not... would appreciate any suggestions/input... everything is working fine no issues at all.. just curiosity really

thanks for your time

I would be going with the raid on the Intel ICH5-R ports and the CD drives on the regular IDE ports as they do not interfere with each other. the performance gain from not sharing bandwidth with the PCI bus is worth it in my experience...

Thank you Tom..

one more question if you dont mind... I assume I cannot just plug in my silicon image raid drives into the intel raid ports (unless you know otherwise?) but what about the non raided drive (the drive I have on the intel ports now not raided) can i just move that over to the silicone image port? do you know if that will work? if not i will have to do some maneuvering i have a few extra drives i can image to/from to get everything transferred properly but would be easier if that drive just moved over onto the other port and was happy...

once again thanks for your help

I would not attempt to move the raided drives over to the ICH5-R SATA ports without a fresh, current backup of the data. the other, non-raided drive will move with no problems. I am not saying that you *cannot* move the raided drives without data loss but my bet would be against it.

yeah i figured as much regarding the raided drives but as long as the non raided drive comes over fine I should be good to go... thanks very much for your help
