hi

just installed a new IS7 mobo and everything works great except the 56k serial modem only downloads at speeds of 3 kbps where on an old gigabyte mobo p3 was 5 kbps connects the same as before at 4.8 kbps but just doesn't substain a decent rate Arghhhh Even worse i have a zoom v92 usb modem that connects at 52kbps and d/ls at these rates which is good however it keeps d/c itself after about 10 mins and i have to reboot whole comp to even get it to work again. What is going on!?

any ideas would be helpful

56k serial modem is a supraexpress 56e pro ext
zoom usb mini ext v92

When I built my first computer, a 386-40, it had a 2400 baud modem and it did not work worth crap. Constant errors and only ~150 bps speed. One day I placed the modem in a different ISA slot and it worked great. It seems RFI from the video card was interfering with the modem. I have found on bad phone lines, that a 28kbps modem can be faster/more reliable than a 56kbps as the 56kbps tries to connect at an unsupportable rate and quits.

I had a modem that was damaged in an electrical storm (I think) and exhibited the same characteristics - would disconnect after a few minutes or hours. It finally died (disconnected in a few seconds) after about 3 weeks. Maybe the same happened to your modem? It is storm season.

As for your other modem connecting at very low speeds, only thing I would suggest is to make sure the respective COM port speed isn't set to such a low speed. Or, make sure the ".inf" file is the correct one for the modem.
