I just got this board set up and the guy who set the board up put the HD and DVD drive on IDE port 2 and the Writer on IDE port 1, i just tried to change the boot order and the system wouldn't boot at all. It works (only works) if i have it configured the way the guy set the board up.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to reverse it?

System is:

IS7E Revision 1.1 Bios 16
2x256MB PC2700 (Temp. from old PC)
P4 2.26b (Temp. from old PC)
Western Digital 80GB JB (Master)
Sony DVD Rom (Slave off HD)
Lite-on 52x24x52 (Master by itself)
Audigy 1
On board Lan enabled.

Just to clarify current set up is Lite-On on IDE 1 and WD and DVD on IDE 2. If i change it the computer refuses to boot at all and if i put it back it works like normal.

If anyone has any ideas i'd really appreciate any advice you can offer.

It doesn't make sense that it only boots with the HD on Ide 2 and not Ide 1. If i reinstall XP Pro SP1a it would be a waste of time as the configuration wouldn't change, i did a repair install when i changed boards, the board is stable and runs good but for that problem. I don't think it's unreasonable to not expect the board to boot with the HD on Ide 1 and the DVD as a slave on Ide 1 and have the CD Writer on Ide 2, that is what i consider a normal arrangement.

I have tried just the HD by itself and no go, would changing the Delay of detection time help the situation? I don't think the board is defective just that odd quirk.

It's your definition of "normal" that's causing you problems ;>)

There is no penalty for leaving things the way they were set up. Performance would be exactly the same. IDE1 and IDE2 are identical and you're not changing anything else, so I'm not sure what you hope to gain by the swap.

That said, I also can't see why it doesn't work. Assuming the jumpers and cables are all hooked up the same way, you should be able to go into the bios and force the controller to redetect all the drives. What happens when you try that?

It just sits there at the Detecting IDE devices (or whatever it says) and after it times out which is as much as 5 minutes it either says none detected or it just stays there doing nothing, as soon as i put it back to Ide 2 everything is fine, but i wouldn't mind having the DVD Rom drive as the booting cd drive not the writer. I'm not trying to gain anything but have it set up as i normally set things up, HD on Ide 1 then DVD as slave on Ide 1 then the Cd Writer on Ide 2, what's wrong with that? I've cleared the Cmos and that didn't help, i can live with it but it's a weird quirk, i do some cd to cd copying and that's why i have them on seperate channels.

OK, I think I understand now.

But you should be able to boot from any of the drives, regardless of what channels they're hooked to.

Personally, I'd stick with what works, even if it's not what you're used to. When you're working in Windows you'll never know how they're connected anyway, and all of these headaches would disappear.

I am puzzled by the failure to detect. You don't say how you're making the swap, but you might try having them set up so they work, and then disconnect the cables from the controller end and swap them. That would rule out any difference in the cables if you were swapping from the drive end. I have seen drives that would boot on one cable and not another.
