Hi All,

I sent my KG7-RAID to a friend and we can't get beyond the initial CMOS setup with it.

Sometimes it boots and posts but after hitting delete to enter bios, he gets nothing but a white stripe at the bottom of the screen.

Most of the time it posts normally and hitting delete will get you into bios settings, but after making changes and saving and exiting, it reboots and posts as if you'd just cleared the CMOS, minus all the changes we thought we'd saved.

I've confirmed that the CMOS jumper is in the correct position and he's already tried another battery.

I can only imagine that the board may be shorting somewhere or that the bios chip itself is bad.

Please help!

that is caused from one or more fans plugged into the motherboard fan headers. electrical noise from the RPM lead on the fan is causing problems with the board. unplug the RPM lead from the plug header on each fan connected to mobo headers and make sure that CPU fan detection is disabled on the bios

Wow, Tom, you're the best! I never would have guessed.

Btw, do you know which color lead is the RPM sensing one?

I see blue, black and red. Would it be the blue one?

Hi rodeoislander -

It's the blue wire (on other fans, the RPM lead will be yellow).

I never said I was color blind...

Now, as to the safe work surface... In TomG's house that would have to be the back 40... flood lights on and wearing his hip waders (and, of course, singling out those sheep with the red X's painted on their backs!).

You oughta know. When he still loved you (blush)... he referred to you as "Dad".

Just what caused your falling out anyway?

Jef

p.s. Tell us about how he got that name "Kaptain Klean", too. Must be a doozy!

blue. the red and black are positive and negative respectively.

That's almost as good as a friend who "thought" he was going about things the right way... assembling the board on his bench before putting. Unfortunately the bench top was metal... pop... sizzle... smoke... etc.

To add insult to injury: it was me who offered up the explanation that his work surface may have been conductive... (he didn't have a clue).

urk! should this friend have been entrusted with expensive electronics?

Nah... he'd probably use his blowdryer in the bathtub if he didn't have computers to destroy (so there's hope for a thinning of the herd).

Well unfortunately it's still a no go. We tried disabling the rpm sensor leads to no avail.

He's sending it all back. I'm going to sell him a P4 533fsb cpu I'm not using and he's going to buy an Asus P4PEX.

Nevertheless I'd still like to use this motherboard in a system I can sell. Any other ideas why it won't save CMOS settings? Bad bios chip perhaps?

typically, when the system won't save the bios settings it is either a dead battery or a short to the case mounting from the mobo. try replacing the battery and if no good, try removing the board from the case, power it up on a safe work surface and then set things up. shut it down and see if it saves the settings.

Thanks for the reply. We did try using a battery from another motherboard with no change resulting.

I wouldn't be surprised to find that when I install the board here it works fine. ;-)

I'll post an update when I get it back.

Now that I received the parts back from him, I am somewhat embarrassed to report that I was telling my friend to select the wrong processor speed in bios and that this is why the cmos settings would not stick.

I was certain that I had sent him a 1900+, not the 2100 it turns out he had. D'oh! :-)

Our next attempt at a system upgrade for him will be in my presence. ;-)

It's very difficult to walk a newbie through the bios settings over the phone...
