Line-In to Digital Out?

Hi, I'm the miserable owner of a Gigabyte GA-8IEXP motherboard. Among
the many subtle faults it has, I believe I have discovered yet
    another!

Just bought a Logitech Z-680 speaker system to replace my analog
setup, hooked it up to the digital output from the motherboard's
Realtek sound, and discovered that sound from the Line-In does not
come out! WAV, MIDI, etc. all work, just no line in.

This leaves me in quite a pickle. I have an ATI A-I-W 8500 and cannot
listen to the TV without the Line-In functioning.

Is this normal behavior for digital sound out or is this yet another
    of Gigabyte's shit design flaws?

    Thanks for any help,
    -B
