    Hello all,

I have an ML 350 server running SBS 2003 with an external Sony SCSI
tape drive attached to a Smart Array 641 controller. I have been
    getting the following error:

    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: symmpi
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 11
    Date:
    Time:
    User: N/A
    Computer:
    Description:
The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Scsi\symmpi1.

    Data:
    0000: 0f 00 10 00 01 00 66 00 ......f.
    0008: 00 00 00 00 0b 00 04 c0 .......À
    0010: 1b 00 02 05 00 00 00 00 ........
    0018: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ........
    0020: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ........
    0028: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ........
    0030: 00 00 00 00 03 00 00 00 ........

Due to this i have not been able to complete any backups.

I have tried flashing the SCSI Bios, updating the drivers and different
backup units. Reading some other posts there have been issues with the
SCSI controller on DELL servers but i can't find anything with HP
    servers.

Has anyone had issues and could you please let me know

    thanks in advance

    Tony

    1. Tape drives + Smart Arrays = not a good idea. Attach it to the onboard
    SCSI, not the SA641
    2. Sounds like a recent / under warranty machine - ring HP and ask them for
    advice
    3. go to www.hp.com and stick "L&TT" in the search box - you can download
Library and Tape tools and run a test.
    4. What sort of drive is it, and have you checked the manual for the LED
    status?

Just glancing at this it appears that you're working with a HP serve
that doesn't have an external port for the onboard SCSI, you have t
order the Internal to External cable kit to be able to connect a
External tape drive. There is a knock-out slot for the SCSI kit t
use when it's installed it will look like another motherboar
connect. All of the newer ML350 and ML370 servers require thi
cabling kit if you wish to connect external devices to the onboar
    SCSI controllers
