Need to rebuild a machine whose power supply failed and took out the 2001-2002 vintage (Gigabyte Socket A with AMD K7 CPU) motherboard. It was running Windows 98 SE (yes, strange to put Windows 98 SE on this machine, but that is necessary for some specific applications.)

Now searching for ATX motherboard for AMD (want AMD, but don't need to re-use the dead machine's processor, so will look at Athlon, etc.) processor. Seeing SATA as primary HDD interface now, but don't want to make that change and want to stick with IDE/ATA. Concerned about backwards compatibility for Win98 environment (seeing "not compatible with windows 98" in many cases).

Anyone able to help me understand what's changed in motherboard chipsets that I should be aware of to avoid this kind of compatibility problem?

    Thanks,

    Dave
