New 10.4.3 install; can't get past grey screen and the"twirling second hand"

    Yes, I updated from 10.2.8.. startup window shows 10.4.3 is installed
    on one partition of my hard drive .
    When I restart to 10.4.3 I get the grey window with the apple symbol
    and the " twirling second hand" but after a minute or two the apple
    symbol disappears and a grey circle with the diagonal,do not......,
    line appears and the twirling second hand keeps on twirling.... I have
    left it alone for several hours and it just continues...
    What does the circle with the diagonal line mean...ect?
    Any suggestions....?
    ( g4, dual 500)
